A pioneer who remembers the
Detroit Jewish community of more
than 6C years ago is reminiscing
on an important occasion in his
life. On his 75th birthday, Maurice
Klein recallS the Shaarey Zedek
leadership when the synagogue was
on Winder Street, the devotions
with which school and synagogue
merged and created the loyalties
of youth to their community, the
development of charitable groups
to assist immigrants and to be
of help to the struggling relatives
abroad.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Klein
—his mother was the former Gizel-
la Schwartz—Maurice Klein follow-
ed a tradition for many services
and affiliations in Detroit. Aaron
Klein had been among the out-
standing very active Detroit Jews
who settled here towards the end
of the last century. He came to
the United States about 1880, was
active in Gemilat .Hasodim (He-
brew Free Loan) the Talmud

MAURICE KLEIN

ers of the land that became Clover
Hill Park Cemetery.
Maurice Klein was born in Cleve-
land, Sept. 3, 1897,
and was
brought to Detroit by his parents
in 1898. As a youngster he walk-
ed a distance to the Shaarey Zedek
Winder Street Synagogue with his
father, and a Sabbath Kiddush at
the home of Abbe Keidan was a
tradition. At 10 Maurice became a
member of Cantor Rogov's choir at
the Winder Street Synagogue. A 50-
year membership in Shaarey Zedek
is part of his pride, and his com-
munity-wide interests are reflected
also in his 46-year-old membership
in Temple Beth El.

Maurice also was associated with
his father in the insurance busi-
ness. A family tradition for joint
philanthropic efforts was establish-
ed when Maurice and his father
kept up the regular attandance at
Shaarey Zedek. Upon his marriage
to the former Ruth Fink, daughter
of the prominent Meyer Finks of
Detroit, Maurice Klein became
equally active in Temple Beth El
and in Reform causes nationally.
In 1962 he was among the Detroit-
ers at the dedication of the Bibli-
cal and Archaeological School of
Hebrew Union College in Jerusa-
lem.

Recollections of youth activi-
ties include Mr. Klein's nostal-
gic reference to his having been
president of the then very popu-
lar Philomathic Debating Society.
Many of Detroit's leading citi-
rens prided themselves on having
received their public speaking
training at Philomathie.

Mr. Klein also was president of
the Webster Debating Society at
Central High School.
He has been active, besides in
synagogue and temple affiliations.
in the Jewish Welfare Board, He-
brew Free Loan, Detroit Round Ta-
ble and i';;;;".:".. r2rEanize the Detroit
Service Group of the Allied
• ish Campaign in which he has
• been active for many years.
Among Mr. Klein's many in-
terests was the Jewish National
Fund and he recalls that worked
in collecting JNF boxes with the
late Zena Ehrlich, mother of
Joseph and Moe Ehrlich.
