The Talit Katan
BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
(Copyright. 1972, JTA Inc.)
It is traditional for a Jewish
male to wear a four-cornered gar-
ment under his coat so that he can
fulfill the commandment which the
Bible prescribes ordering a Jew to
attach fringes to the four corners
of his garment. Since our garments
today are not four cornered, the
talit katan is put on so that the
fringes can be attached there.
The reason it is called a talit katan
is because it is not usually as large
as an outer garment which is
called talit. Also, the large outer-
garment of four corners which is
worn during the morning services •
and to which the fringes are at-
tached is called talit. Therefore, '
the smaller garment is called talit
katan.
The usual age for boys to be
inaugurated into the practice of
wearing the talit katan is three
years. Sonic say that this is about
the age when the child speaks
fluently. Some authorities say
that a child under this age should
not wear a talit katan. The rea-
son for this is that the life of a
human being is compared to the
life of a tree. In the case of a
tree, its fruit is forbidden for
three years — the first three
years of its existence IDeuter•
onomy 20:191.
Thus, some people regard a child
of less than 3 years as not be-
ing ready for dedication to holy
commandments. It is interesting
that some people will not cut the
hair of a child younger than 3
years old because of the same rea-
son — i.e.. just as a tree does not
have its fruit plucked in the first
three years so does the human tree
not have its hair cut during the
first three years of the life of a
,hod. It is interesting to note that
recent psychological and educa-
tional developments have shown
that a child begins to be very
absorptive at the age of 3.
