The seven were assigned to translate classical philosophi- cal works, which do not exist in Hebrew, from French, English and German, into Hebrew. These books are now beginning to appear. Prof. Rabin noted that translation can be an "ex- port business" and said that Finance Minister Pin- has Sapir, in a recent let- ter to Hebrew University President Avraham Har- man, stated that Israel ex- ports more than $1,000,000 worth of translated scien- tific literature annually as well as $3,000,000 worth of printed material in lan- guages other than Hebrew. Sapir, urging the univer- sity to establish a profes- sional translation course, added that this would mean a substantial increase of this export "commodity," He noted that it has a high added value and constitutes an efficient exploitation of the prolific know - how which exists in this area in Israel. The study of ancient lan- guages can be a boon, the university spokesnbas said... • just as teaching it can be a joy. Several teachers from abroad, he noted, have come to the university together with their students because there were no other instruc- tors available and the stu- dents wanted to continue their studies. In one case, a teacher who was providing instructions in 10 of these languages left the university "and the 10 languages left with her," he laughed. Their ideas and their way of speech do not always con- form with his mind. but he is aware of their loyal al- legiance, of their thorough Jewishness, and thinks: "Heaven knows, maybe these youngsters carry in their hands the tonic, the juvenile vigor for their old- aged people, maybe they will re-erect its stature and adorn its gray head with a crown of honor and splendor He said he loves me... The two-year diploma course will be run by the university's center for ap- plied linguistics, directed by Dr. Raphael Nir, which is advised by an inter-discipli- nary council under the chair- manship of Prof. Rabin.
