I. LETTER BOX . A Look at 'David . by Art Curator Editor, The Jewish News: While in London. I visited the world-famous Victoria and Albert Museum. There I saw an exact replica of Michelangelo's David. As I was looking at it, I remind- ed myself of the exchange of ()pin- , ions in The Jewish News (April 7. 21) regarding the "Jewishness" of the statue. It then occured to me to find out what the museum's director thinks about this matter. The reply I received I wish to share with the readers of this paper: I am not aware of any spe- cialist study on this factor, Actually I cannot think of a • . representation of David which g. '). shows him circumcised—Dona- ': tello's for instance is not. The Renaissance sculptor did not tend to be very literal-minded about the images he carved and there was always a strong overlay of classical motifs in religious sculpture of the 15th and I6th centuries. Micheangelo's David was in fact designed to be a political allegory of the Republican government then in power after the fall of the Medici in 1494, rather than a religious sculp- ture or indeed a likeness of an Old Testament leader.
