It is customary for the housewife
to sort of wave her hands back
and forth when lighting the Sab-
bath candles.
Generally speaking, lighting
the Sabbath candles presents a
problem in Jewish observance.
Traditionally, Jewish law requires
a benediction to be made before
performing a mitzva. Thus, one
would be required to offer the
benediction before lighting the
candles. However, reciting. the
benediction might be considered
as already accepting the Sabbath
and thus the candles could not be
lit after the benediction since
candle lighting is a violation of the
Sabbath. Thus, the candles are lit
first and the light is shielded from
the housewife's eyes so that she
can pronounce the benediction and
then gaze upon the candles, the
latter being an act following the
benediction. The question is: how
is she to shield the light from
her vision' Some say she should
cover her eyes. Others say she
should hold her hands over the
candles shielding them from vision.
As is often the case in such con-
troversies, both acts are done.
Thus, she covers the candles with
her hand and then covers her eyes
with her hands. In order to do both
of these consecutively, her hands
would have to be going back 'and
forth and would appear as if they
were waving.
What is the proper posture
when reciting the Kidush on
Friday night: standing or sitting?
:*
There seems to be two varying
i* opinions. Some stand, while others
sit. Those who sit do so because
the Kidush is related to the meal
and things that are related to the
meal are done in the sitting posi-
tion. Thus, should the Kidush be
recited in a standing position the
Kidush would not be related to
the meal. Some of the mystics dis-
agreed with this because they con-
sidered the Kidush as a form of
greeting to the Sabbath queen or
the Sabbath bride. A queen, na-
turally, should be greeted by
standing in respect to her. The
blessings that are chanted in front
of the bride at the wedding cere-
mony are also chanted in the same
position. The junction of the Jew
and the Sabbath is like the union
of the groom anti the bride under
the wedding canopy. The Kidush
is thus like the benedictions
chanted under the canopy which
are done in a standing position.

By MAXIM GORKY •
In my early youth I read—I have
forgotten where—the words of .the
ancient Jewish sage—Hillel, if I
remember rightly: "If thou are not
for thyself, who will he for thee?
But if thou art for thyself alone,
wherefore art thou'"
The inner meaning of these
words impressed me with its pro-
found wisdom, and I interpreted
them for myself in this manner: I
must actively take care of myself,
that my life should be better, and
I I must not impose the care of my-
self alone, of nothing but my own
personal life, it will be useless,
ugly, meaningless. This thought
ate its way deep into my soul, and
I say now with conviction: "Hillel's
wisdom served as a strong staff
on my road, which was neither
even nor easy.
I believe that Jewish wisdom is
more all-human and universeal
than any other; and this not only
because of its immemorial age,
not only because it is the first
born, but also because of the pow-
erful humaneness that saturates it
because of its high estimate of
man.

TEL AVIV (JTA)—A strike by
some 130 workers of the rolling
mills of Steel City, south of Acre,
which is the main supplier of steel
for construction work throughout
Israel, brought operations of the
entire steel-making complex to
a virtual halt Tuesday.

Officials also reported that be-
I cause output of the plant is ab-
sorbed almost immediately by the
local market, the management of
' Koor, the giant Histadrut industrial
operation which owns Steel City,
said it- would have to place im-
mediate and urgent orders for
steel from abroad to fill the gap.

Koor officials said the strike
was sparked by a management
proposal for changes in shifts de-
' signed to boost Steel City pro-
ductivity as part of a massive
IL 54,000,000 ($12,960,000) expan
• sion of the steel-making facilities.
Steel City currently produces
, 1,200 tons monthly, the officials
said

Earlier, Herut Party leader
Menahem Begin accused Hista-
drut Secretary General Yitzhak
Ben-Aharon again of inciting "class
warfare" and "social revolution."
Begin, whose Herut Party is the
dominant voice In the Gahal fac-
tion, declared in a television inter-
view that there was no room in
Israel for actions like those of Ben
Aharon, who, he said, posed a
threat to the development of the
country's economy.
Begin added that he did not put
the responsibility for the current
strike wave on Ben Aharon, who
has been outspoken in the workers'
behalf, but he did say that the
Histadrut chief had the power to
hold back the economy and dis-
courage investors.
