of 10 Selected
for NFJC Awards

A University of Michigan music
major. Kay L. Kaufman of Dallas.
who is conducting her doc-
toral research on the "Liturgical
Music of the Falashas of Ethiopa,"
is among the award winners.
The students selected were

recommended by the foundation's
Academic Advisory Council of
which Dr. Salo W. Baron of Co-
lumbia University and Dr. Harry
A. Wolfson of Harvard University
are honorary chairman.
During the 12 years that NFJC
has been granting fellowships,
over 150 pre-doctoral students have
been recipients. Most of them are
now on the faculties of major
American colleges and universities
as well as in leading Canadian and
Israeli institutions of 'higher edu-
cation.
Among this year's remaining nine
fellowship winners, two are study-
ing at Columbia University, two at
Harvard, two at the City University
of New York, one each at Bran-
deis, University of California at
Berkeley and the Hebrew Uni-
versity in Jerusalem.
In terms of fields of specializa-
tion. four are in history. two each
in biblical studies and Near East-
ern languages. and one each in
linguistics and ethno-musicology..
In addition to its grants program
to students and established Jewish
li
scholars, the NFJC provides con-
sultation and guidance to Jewish
communities, organizations. edu-
cational and other institutions and
individuals for activities in the
field of Jewish culture; encourages
the teaching of Jewish Studies in
colleges and universities; and
serves as clearinghouse of informa-
tion regarding American Jewish
culture. The Foundation also
serves as the administrative arm
of the Joint Cultural Appeal on
behalf of nine national Jewish cul-
tural agenciees.

TELETHON FOR MUSCULAR
DYSTROPHY will be broadcast
from the Michigan State Fair-
grounds this year, announced Rich-
ard J. Miller, president of the
Greater Detroit-Southeastern Mich-
igan chapter of Muscular Distro-
phy Associations. This year WKBD-
TV, Channel 50 will do a special
"remote" broadcast from the fair-
grounds' Comunity Arts Audi-
torium, with a live "on-camera"
audience of Michigan fairgoers.
