Yarmulka Letter Draws
Response From Reader

Editor, The Jewish News:
In your issue of July 21, Joselyn
Krieger details her tribulations
over her Yeshiva boys wearing
yarrnulkas and the taunts of other
Jewish children toward them. This.
unfortunately, is a part of the evil
of the Galuth. In Israel, it has
been reported that the Yeshiva
youths there. wearing yarmulkas
of course, are considered as the
moral elite of the community's
rising generation, a factor in the
alleviation of any deviational ten-
dencies on the part of the youth
in Israel.
Locally, it has been shown that
Jewish children who attend Yesh-
ivas and day schools are not sub-
ject to the ominous derelictions
which have invaded the tradition-
ally wholesome Jewish youth,
some of whom have become ob-
sessed with the permissiveness
which is so evident in the larger
community of America. To the ex-
tent that the wearing of a yarm-
ulka is a mark of self-discipline
and a sense of responsibility, it
is to be encouraged, notwith-
standing the jeers of the know-
nothings. And this may well apply
to children as well _as adults.
This writer knows of an instance
where a religious Jewish teacher
was named to a post in a Detroit
high school; reporting to work
wearing his yarmulka he was call-
ed in by the principal that it
would not be permitted. The young
man removed his yarmulka, put
on his hat and coat and turned to
go out, with the remark that if
he could not be loyal to his faith
while at his post he would not
want to work there. "Wait" said
the principal, or words to that
effect, "if your faith means so
much to you, then you are just
the man we want to inculcate mor-
ality in our young people." He is
still on this post, and still wearing
the yarmulka.
