Rishon LeZion (First in
Zion) celebrated its 90th an-
niversary last month. It was
the first successful Jewish
colony set up by pioneers
from outside Israel. Old-tim-
ers recalled that Naftali
Hertz hither wrote Hatikvah
in the village in 1883; the na-
tional flag was designed in
the home of one of the found-
ers, Zeev Abramovich, who
had been the owner of a
knitting mill in his native SI
Petersburg; and that the
town is the home of the first
Jewish kindergarten, elemen-
tary school and all-Jewish
wind orchestra. Minutes
away from Tel Aviv and 50
minutes from Jerusalem,
Rishon is today one of the
country's largest municipal
territories. Its population
was 46,500 by the end of
1970 and has now grown to
55,000. Rishon's Mayor Han-
ania Gibstein noted that this
latest population explosion
of nearly 20 percent occur-
red since his assumption of
office in the last election-
although he disclaims any
responsibility for it.
