UNICEF Is Utilizing Israel-Born
Artist's Card for Rosh Hashana

This year, for the first time.
UNICEF has produced a special
version. of one of its distinguished
greeting cards.. Blue Disc, for Rosh
1{ashana, which will be observed
on Sept. 9 and 10.
Designed by Rina Rotholz, Is-
raeli-born artist now living in the
United Stptes, the heavily embossed
card is an original and contempor-
ary concept which draws imagin-
atively upon the images and sym-
bolisms of the ancient Middle East
civilizations.
Reproduced from tile in a special
graphic technique called
graphy developed by the artist, the
central design is a crudely-sniped
blue disc, embossed with pome-
granate seeds (symbol of fertility)
and other ancient motifs, with a
line of Aramaic lettering below.
The bilingual greetings on the in-
side message panel are: ''L'Shanah
Tova Tikatevu" (A good year, and
a healthy one) in Hebrew calli-
graphy, and "Greetings and Best
Wishes for the New Year" in
English.
Proceeds of the sales of Blue
Disc, as of all UNICEF cards, will
help the United Nations Children's
Fund to broaden the scope of its
activities in the fields' of child
nutrition, mother and child health,
education, and the production of
"safe water" which is essential
to the eradication of disease. The
design will also be included in
UNICEF's regular greeting card
collection this fall, with the mes-
sage "Peace on Earth" in the five
official United Nations' languages
or without any message.
Mrs. Rotholz is a member of the
Chelouches. family of Sephardic
Jews who migrated from Portugal
to Algiers in the 15th Century and
came to Palestine in 1838 when it
was still ruled by the Ottoman
Empire. Educated in Israel and
Lebanon, the artist worked as an
architectural draftsman in the Is-
raeli army during her country's
War for Independence, then settled
in the United States where her in-
terest turned to fine arts. Through
studies at the Pratt Graphic Art
Center and the Brooklyn Museum,
