Ramban's Seal at Israel Museum

The personal seal of Ramban, one of the greatest Jewish schol-
ars, who lived in Spain 700 years ago, was found and placed as a
special exhibit at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The seal carries
the name "Moshe, son of the late rabbi Nahman Gerondi, hazak."
The Ramban was a biblical commentator, major talmudic authority,
known philosopher, doctor and leader. He was born in Gerona and
Was therefore called Gerondi. The Ramban was made to participate
in a public disputation in Barcelona in 1263, by King James the
First. It was the only case in that period in which a Jew won; but
two years later he was accused of blasphemy for the publication of
his words in the debate. Perhaps as a result of this, in 1267, the
Ramban moved to the Holy Land. Ile reorganized the Jewish com-
munity in Jerusalem, where he built a synagogue known to this
day as the Ramban Synagogue. A year later, he returned to the
port town of Acre, where he died in 1270. The seal, less than an inch
in diameter, had been found this year in Telliaisun, five miles
southeast of Acre and purchased by the museum.

Amnesty International Office to Open in Israel

NEW YORK JTA)—Rep. Daniel
Rostenkowski (D., Ill.) was urged
by the Agudath Israel of America
to withdraw a bill he introduced
to extend daylight saving time
throughout the entire calendar
year.
This request, by Rabbi Moshe
Sherer, executive president of Agu-
duth Israel and Rabbi Chaim C.
Keller, chairman of its Public Af-
fairs Commission in Chicago, noted
that despite the possible benefits
accruing from an extra hour of
daylight during the early evening
hours, year-round daylight saving
time would create a major prob-
lem for religious Jews.
According to Jewish religious
law, the earliest time for morning
prayers is one hour before sunrise.
As a result, during winter time.
prayers cannot begin before 6:15
a.m., the Agudath Israel officials
explained. By advancing the clock
one hour, the observant Jew would
not be able to begin his morning
prayers until 7:15 a.m .

Man Who Liberated Be rgen-Belsen Hailed

LONDON (JTA) — The Jewish
community and survivors of Nazi
concentration - camps are paying
tribute to Brig. Gen. Hugh Llewelyn
Glyn Hughes, the chief medical of-
ficer of the British Second Army
which liberated Bergen - Belsen
camp on April 15, 1945. Gen.
Hughes celebrated his 80th birth-
day this week.
Joseph Rosensaft, president of
the World Federation of Bergen-
Belsen Associations said that "the
80th birthday of this great man
provides an opportunity for record-
ing our feelings of gratitude for

what he has done and accomplished
in those bitter days after libera-
tion, when so many were free bu t
not yet certain whether they would
live to savor their freedom."

Gen. Hughes is credited with
"super-human efforts" to save the
lives of many camp survivors who
were thought to be beyond recov-
ery when they were liberated.

Following the war, he served for
several years as president of
"Bridge," an organization that
arranges youth exchanges between
Britain and Israel.
