A very few weeks ago, the New York Times found itself
compelled to offer an editorial explanation on its position
regarding the publication of a vitriolic full page advertise-
ment that was filled with lies about Jews and Israel. Appar-
ently the great newspaper has not learned its oven lesson when
it chose to publish one of the most outrageously hate-provoking
art cles. in its issue of last Monday.
When an Arab hate monger spouts venom against Jews.
Zi.n;.-ts. Israel. in the united Nation,:. it has become accepted
an established policy of utilizing the forum of the interna-
tional organization to spread misirifurmation and to create
pre indices that are uncalled for in a diplomatic sphere. That
is why the UN had lost the confidence of justice loving people
—because it had been turned into a forum for hate.
But when a newspaper like the New York Times pub-
lishes an article "The Arabs Betrayed," by an Iraqi hate
monger, which repeats the lies that had been spoken unceas-
ingly in the UN. it becomes a party to the spread of bigotry. I
The atrocious article of last Monday is not only filled
with lies: its accompanying cartoon is an affront to all citizens
of this land. It is reminiscent of Adolf Streicher's "Der
Stuermer" in the Hitler era. It portrays an embittered figure,
apparently intended to show an embittered Sen. George
McGovern. caricatured as Moses the Lawgiver, holding the
Itablets of Hebrew Law. It is an inexcusable resort to prejudice.
The article itself seeks to give the impression that Jews
are conducting a war against Arabs and that Arabs are vic-
tims of character assassination in the press and in motion
pictures in this country: that Arabs are vilified as human
beings. Nothing can be farther from the truth. If Arabs are
molested humanly it is by their own compatriots in Arab
countries. In Israel. when Arabs from many Moslem countries
visit Israel, they are the equals of Jews, are treated as guests
with all the courtesies of good Israeli hosts: and on the world
arena, and in the Middle East spheres, the battle that con-
tinues unnecessarily is political only, necessitating occasional
military actions. Humanly, neither Jews, nor Israelis, nor
their Christian friends wherever they may live—whether they
be a Roosevelt, a Nixon, a McGovern—have ever spoken in
terms of character assassination. This is a political gimmick
of an Arab who seeks to betray the truth by claiming an Arab
betrayal, and the New York Times—by giving a platform to
such balderdash and drivel and accompanying it with an
insulting cartoon—has become an ally to hate mongernig.
