to the state. Lately, howevi.r, for-
mer Zahal generals started to re-
veal secrets about the Six-Day
War.
It started with two former gen-
erals—Ezer Weizman. (Me( of the

eral staff in the Six-Day War, now
chairman of the executive of the
Iferut Party, and Matityahu Peled.
member of the general staff in
the Six-Day War, now a lecturer
at Tel Aviv University.
Weizman declared in public, in
contradiction to the official Israel
propaganda on the eve of the Six-
Day War, that there was no threat
of Israel's annihilation at that
time Israel 'started the war as it
watched Nasser's intensive prep-
arations for an all-out campaign
against her, and intended to de-
liver him a strong blow, in order
to improve security on Israel's
borders
Peled came to the same con-
clusion, maintaining that it uas
a vital necessity for Israel to start
the war owing to Nasser's aggres-
sive preparations.
On the eve of the Six-Day War,
Peled was one of the generals who
had categorically demanded that
the government decide in favor
of an early war against Egypt.
But lately, as a reserve officer,
he is one of the strongest oppo-
nents of Israel's policy and voices
his opinion for maximum terri-
torial concessions, and withdrawal
from occupied territories, in or-
der to reach a peaceful solution
of the Near East conflict -
The public statements of these
two well-known generals have
caused great damage to Israel in

TEL AVIV—Until now we have

ers have talked too much. Some-
times they caused political damage

the international arena . The Six-Day War had been in the hands
French newspapers Le Monde and of the Arab leaders.

really meaning them.

In the meantime, some articles
that have appeared in the Israel
• press add interest to the discussion.

' Chief of Staff in the Six-Day
War, Itzhak Rabin. (now Israeli
ambassador in Washington) and
his deputy, Chaim Bar-Lev, later
chief of staff and now minister
of commerce and industry, wrote
•
that Israel was endangered by to-
tal destruction, but if Nasser had
started the war first, it would
have suffered many losses and
severe damage to cities and
villages.

French newspapers have made
capital out of these declarations.
The Israel Embassy in Paris has
had to clarify matters by issuing
special statements.

The Israeli press reacted strongly
on this matter and accused the
former generals of revealing in-
formation about their active sery
ice in the army in' order to make
political profit.

There is no doubt that Nasser
intended to attack Israel with the
purpose of its annihilation, and
the total wiping out of the State
of Israel from the map of the
Near East. The question is whether
Nasser would have succeeded in
his aim had he opened the war
first. The answer of many ex-
perts is that, in this case too, he
would have failed.

The difference between Egypt
and Israel is, among other things,
that Egypt has a large regular
army, whereas the Israeli army
relies mostly on reservists who
serve only one month a year in
the army. On 'the eve of the Six-
Day War. Israel had to mobilize
all reservists and to stop work in
factories, crippling the economic
life of the coountry. Had Israel
not decided on a quick and short
war, it - would have suffered sub-
stantial losses and the UN would
have put pressure on her to grant
further territorial concessions in
the direction of the borders of
1947. This would have reduced Is-
rael to a small and crippled coun-
try with tens of thousands of wid-
ows and orphans.

Characteristic of the PPlemic's
in Israel about public statements
of former generals was a letter
from a 10-year-old public school
youngster from Haifa. Noemi Pe-
leg. which was published in the
daily Maariv. The . girl asks the
general, to be cautious in their
statements saying it was quite
clear. according to the announce-
ments of the Arab leaders, what
would have happened to Israel and
its people if the initiative in the
