What are the chances for Judaism among Jews who predominantly consider themselves Jewish only by birth and have no interest in Jewish cultural values? These questions weigh very heavy now on the minds of leaders of major Jewish organizations. They constitute the reason why the American Jewish Committee has formed its Task Force Policy Committee to assess the probable trends and developments in the 1970s that will affect the future of the Jewish community. CJFWF: Basic to any evaluation of the future prospects of the Jewish community in the United States is a Jewish population study li which would bring out all the factors affecting the future growth and characteristics of the Jewish population. Such a study is now being completed by the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. This is the first time in the history of American Jewry that such a comprehensive study has been undertaken. Its results will be re- I leased by the CJFWF in a series of reports at the end of this year I and in 1973. They will give a clear picture on the demographic struc- ture of the Jewish population, the striking changes in the composi- tion of American Jewry, the size of Jewish families, and the propor- tionate decrease of first generation American-born Jews as compared to the proportion of the second and third generation increases. But apart from the demographic information, Jewish leadership will be particularly interested in what the CJFWF study reveals re- garding Jewish education, patterns of Jewish activity, practice and for Jewish and other needs, shifts attitudes, patterns of Jewish giving other of Jewish population among communities and regions as well as aspects of Jewish life. He foresees among other things that the continuously rising education levels among non- Jews may lead to a narrowing of educational differentials between Jews and non-Jews. He also foresees a general upward shift in the occupational level a narrowing of population. This, he says, will lead to of the general the existing differences in the occupational structure of the Jewish and non-Jewish population. In turn, this narrowing in both educational and occupational differences will lead to reduction in the income dif- ferences currently characterizing Jews and non-Jews.
