Irish Scholar Studies
Yiddish at Yeshiva U.
NEW YORK — Is there any re-
lation between the fate of the Irish
• language and the decreasing usage
I of Yiddish in the United States?
A young Irish scholar is studying
Yiddish at Yeshiva University so
he can find out.
' Alan J. Hudson observed that
the Yiddish-English-speaking per-
son in America is abandoning Yid-
ish in favor of English. In Ireland,
there is a similar trend: English
is gaining in preference over
Gaelic.
Hudson has been doing graduate
work at Yeshiva University since
1968 under a fellowship from Ire-
, land's ministry of education.
