Black Church Plans

I U. S., Israel Leaders
I at Hadassah Conclave

a Neu, 'Holy City'

A black church organization in I
Detroit is hoping to build a new
town called Israel City in Sumpter
Township near Belleville. The plan
is being organized by the Spiritual
Israel Church, which is based at
9375 Amity and has 30 churches
in the country.
Bishop Haywood, leader of the
church, said the "holy city" will
be open to everyone.
The church believes in the im-
portance of the name Israel and
acceptance of Holy Scripture.
which is supposed to have a
"cleansing power,"

The Jewish News of Newark.'
whose new polic3 against publica-
tion of mixed marriage announce-
ments was reported in The Detroit
Jewish News recently, already has
been forced to alter that policy and
now will publish such announce-
ments.
The policy which was adopted
in January and implemented in
May, provided that "in those in-
stances where the facts in the
marriage announcement raise
questions in the mind of the editor
as to whether both partners to the
marriage are Jewish, he or a
member of his editorial staff shall
inquire verbally of either the
bride, groom or a parent, whoever
is most accessible, as to the Jew-
ishness of the bride and groom."
Only those marriages in which
both parties are Jewish would be
published.
In a letter to the Detroit Jewish
News, Saul Schwarz, director of
social planning of the Jewish Com
munity Council of Essex County,
related the latest developments
at the New Jersey newspaper,
which is owned by the community
council.
Schwarz wrote that following
the implementation of the new
policy, "a number of objections
were received, both by telephone
and mail. Because of these ob•
jections, as well as other con-
siderations, the executive com-
mittee of the Jewish News, at •
a special meeting on June 5 ...
voted to suspend temporarily the
weekly notice published in the
Jewish News regarding the new
policy.
