This is a short period when coin
pared to the venerable histories
of European and American sym-
phonies. Still, the orchestra has
maintained the standards and ac-
tivities of an internationally rec-
ognized orchestra ever since its
inception, and repeatedly has been
described as "Israel's most treas-
ured cultural possession."
The rotation of guest conductors
and outstanding world famous solo-
ists like Rubinstein, Heifetz, Platt-
gorsky, Stern, Arrau, Cas.als, and
many others throughout the years
has made the orchestra "wonder-
fully elastic." in the words of one
expert.
For the last three years,
Zubin Mehta has been music
adviser. Under his direction, the
orchestra is adding a style of
its own to its proven adaptabil-
ity.
Mehta received his early musi-
cal training from his father. Mehli
Mehta. in Bombay. Despite his
early training in music, Mehta
at one period entered medical
school. but soon abandoned that
plan. In 1957 he was graduated
from the Academy of Music in
Vienna with a diploma in conduct-
ing
The following year Mehta began
conducting the orchestra of the
Musikverein in Vienna, and in
the same year he went to Liver-
pool, to enter the first international
conductors competition: he won
first prize over 100 other contest-
ants.
Substituting for Eugene Or- I
mandy. Mehta bec a m e the I
youngest conductor to lead the
Vienna Philharmonic,
and he
was the youngest man in history
to conduct the Berlin Philhar-
monic. At 25 he was invited to
conduct the then 25-year-old Is-
rael Philharmonic Orchestra,
and was invited to return every
y- ear until their mutual 50th
birthday,
In
1962 Mehta was
engaged
as music director of the Los An-
geles Philharmonic Orchestra,
thus becoming, at 26. the L.A.
Philharmonic's youngest perma-
nent conductor.
Zubin Mehta was appointed mu-
sic adviser to the Israel Philhar-
monic Orchestra in October 1969,
after having led the orchestra as
guest conductor for seven consecu-
i“, years
