CO) CA Tr

GENEVA (JTA) — The World
Conference of Jewish Organizations
(COJO) was taken to task for hav
ing done "nothing practical up to
now" for Jewish education in the
diaspora.
It was warned that this was "the
last occasion for COJO to tackle
this most vital problem in Jewish
life today." The castigation and the
warning were voiced by Louis
Pincus, chairman of the World
Zionist Organization Executive in
Jerusalem with Dr. Joachim Prinz
of COJO. Pincus delivered the key-
note address at COJO's annual
plenary meeting at which Jewish
education was the major item on
the agenda.
Describing the position of Jew-
ish education in various coun-
tries, Pincus said, "In Sout
Africa, where the Jews have an
educational system, this system
is now on the verge of disintegra-
tion and there is no appreciation
by the communal leaders as a
group for the overriding import-
ance of Jewish education."
He observed that "the quality of
Jewish education in South Africa,
though higher than in some other
places, is not adequate to ensure
Jewish continuity."
Pincus said that in the United
Kingdom, "the Zionist Federation
schools have made a contribution
to Jewish education, and so have
some others, but there is still a
long, long way before Zionist Fed-
eration schools and others can be
deemed to he ensuring Jewish con-
tinuity."
In Argentina, the WZO leader
said. "the system of Jewish ecluca•
Lion was faced with a financial col-
lapse. and it was bailed out by the
World Zionist Organization. The
crisis continues and the WZO and
the American Joint Distribution
Committee are trying to sane the 1
situation."
Prof. Ar:ch Tartakower, director
of the World Jewish Congress!
cultural department and chairman
of the World Hebrew Union (Brit
Ivrit Olamiti, stressed that knowl-
cd.ze of the Hebrew language was
the primary instrument in any
.1e•Ish educational program. "No
Jewish education will he effective
unless it is based on Hebrew and
aims to make the Jewish child
bilingual." he said.
The conference concluded after!
resolving to augment its cornmisH
sion on Jewish education in the
Maspora with representatives of
educational institutions not now
participating. The session also
adopted resolutions on Soviet Jew-
ry. Jews in Arab countries and the
Middle East situation.
Dr. William A. Wexler of At-
lanta was re-elected chairman cf
COJO and Pincus and Rabbi Joa-
chim Prinz were re-elected cc- ,
chairmen.
The education commission was
authorized to set up a world com-
mittee as well as regional sub-
committees. The resolution stipu-
lated that "the opportunity
- given to all constituent bodies to
put it before their governing bodies
for their approval." with the un- :.
derstanding that the commission's
work would proceed in the mean-
time
