Bonn Jury Frees
Convicted Nazi

BONN (JTA) — A former Nazi
police officer was set free by a
Hamburg jury after it found him
guilty of having participated in th•
morders of at least 1,800 Jews in
the Lublin district of Poland dur
ing World War II.
The jury that convicted 62-year-
old Anton Becker refused to sen-
tence him on grounds that he
played a relatively minor role in
the mass killings and was, more-
, over, ''bound by the military di,
cipline which reigned at the time."
Three former SS leaders re-
ceived light sentences in Munich .
for their role in the murders of
400 Polish Jews.
A court in Essen. meanwhile,
has postponed for the second time
, the trial of Horst Wagner, an aide
to Adolf Eichmann accused of com-
plicity in the mass murder of
350,000 Jews. Wagner, who is free
on bail, was released from trial
in order to undergo an eye opera ,
Lion.
The presiding judge, Walter
Bchringer, said he intends to open
the trial in July. But the accused
. has already served notice that he
intends to enter a hospital for
• treatment of "other illness' . after
his eye surgery.
Meanwhile, charges of wartime
murders and assisting others to
commit murders during the Ger-
man occoupation of Poland have
been filed against two former SS
members, Johann Baecker, 60, and
(fans Quambusch. 67, the West
Berlin attorney general's office an
flounced.
According to the charges, SS
units in which the two men were
enlisted, carried. out several mass
shootings of Jews. They also are
charged with participating in for
tures of Jewish women, men and
in.!. ants.
They did this, the charges s
.
on their own volition.
Prior to being taken into custo

Ii' mg . quietly in obscurity. Baecker
