Recalled in President's Sermon

Congratulate, .11

Cong. Beth Shalom was w.thout
its rabbi last Saturday. but :he
synagogue president. Ina sermon

the capabilities to work ,...vge:her

Rabbi Halpern, 44. had occupied
the Beth Shalom pulpit front its
meeptiori almost 18 years it
was ins first rabbinical position
after graduation from the Jewish
Theological Seminary and service;
as a chaplain in the Korean War.
The congregation has established
a Rabbi Mordecai S. Halpern Me-
morial Fund in his name.
Beth Shalom President Julius
Harwood said, in part, of Rabbi
Halpern:
"His credo was take any Jew-
ish step--even the smallest step.
Make a Jewish beginning. lie
was well aware of the practical
benefits of prayer. How many
times when we stood f or the
Amida, did he implore us, read
it in English or Hebrew, read
it all or in part, introduce our
own prayers, or just flow with
the spiritual mood and ,meditate
in the silence of the moment
was Mordecai

E.apian's 'continuously
civilization.' And he knew that
from our own Lives and our own •
times we had to create our own
traditions to add to those of our
ancestors . .
"It is ironic that today's Torah -
and Haftora readings deal with
the tribulations of Moses and Sam-
uel with the people of Israel.:
Ntorely Halpern would have been
the first to smile at this touch of
irony. We all endow our leaders
and rabbis with super human quali-
ties and infallibility of practice.
And, when as they must. they fail
us with human errors and human
traits we feel cheated. And he
knew that so it has been. and so
it will always be . .
"Mordecai Halpern was not an
'establishment' Rabbi. Above the
Rabbinical Assembly, above the
Jewish communal establishment,
above academic scholarship, above
all else, his priority was his con-
'
gregation. He was a pastoral
rabbi in the true sense. And so
for us he was our teacher, inter-
preter, sermonizer, counsellor,
psychiatrist, lecturer, organizer,
administrator, educator, fund-
- --,raiser and friend. We expected him
to be our 'man for all seasons.'

"Mordecai Halpern was rot a
Jewish t hanyinist. But in the
Jewish trilogy of God, Torah and
Israel ru. taught us the special
significance of Israel the state
and Israel the people. Since the
day of 'ts statehood he had a
special lose for the (and of
Israel .
"Ahoy.- ail Mordy Halpern was
a man as v.- ell as a rabbi. He was

he also knew that our
rabbis were always men of our
people
- And so there was a man—an
unusual and special man. And
there was a rabbi—an unusual and
special rabbi. And the man and
the racb4 are gone.
"But there is the congregation—
his congregation—our congregation.
Mordy Halpern knew and taught
us that death is a natural part of
the process of life That is Jewish

continuity."
