Goren-Gorochovski, a mem-
ber of the first Knesset and
a director of the Workers
Bank and various Histadrut-
owned factories, died June
11, He was 75.
Born in Russia, he settled
in Israel in 1921. He organ-
ized the first cooperative of
building laborers and later
became managing director
of Solel Boneh, the Histadrut
construction cooperative. He
served in the Knesset from
1949 to 51.
Rabbi Mordecai Halpern, Head
of Beth Shalom for 17 Years
Some 1,500 persons attended fu-
neral services Wednesday for Rabbi
Mordecai S. Halpern, the 444year-
old spiritual leader of Cong. Beth
Shalom who was found deald on
Monday. Burial was at Adas) Sha-
[ lom Cemetery.
Services, held at the synagpgue,
were addressed by Rabbi Bernard
Lipnick of Cong. Bnai Amooilia of
St. Louis, where Rabbi Halpern's
late father had occupied thei pul-
pit for many years; and by Rabbi
David Arzt of Long Island, a lose
friend and former classmate of
Rabbi Halpern when they jwere
students at the Jewish Theolo g ical
Seminary. Cantor Ruben Erlbaum
chanted the prayers.
Rabbi Halpern, 25641 Colleen,
Oak Park, held the Beth Shalom
pulpit for 17 years and waS its
first full-time rabbi.
Born in St. Louis, he held a
bachelors degree from ColuMbia
University and masters degree in
Hebrew literature from the JeWish
Theological Seminary, where! he
was ordained in 1953.
Ile was considered a brilliant
scholar with a special interest in
philosophy. A student of Dr. Mor-
decai Kaplan, Rabbi Halpern had
a close relationship with the Re-
constructionist leader.
