The conference, conducted by
scholars from the U.S. and Latin
American countries and leaders
of Latin American Jewish com-
munities, preceded the annual
meeting of the W.IC's governing
council.
l'he meeting. attended by dele-
ales from 20 countries, was the
futst by the WJC's top governing
„•I to be held in the U.S. for
,. c■ re than a decade.
Panelists on Latin America
agreed that while anti,Sernitism
esists and is a factor in the life
of Latin American Jewish corn-
monities, it is the rapid growth of
nationalism and the changing eco-
nomic and social structure that
cause the greatest uncertainty
among Latin American Jews.
Prof. Kalman Silveri, head of
the Ihero-American Research Cen-
ter at New York University, said
the increasing national awareness
of people in Latin Ameitica and the
emergence of nation states will
break down existing structures.
According to Dr. Natan Lerner
of .1rgentina, who is presently
, sso, iated with Tel Aviv Uni-
versity, "Disorientation is per
h-ps the mildest name for the
state of mind of wide circles
•f Jews in Latin America."
He noted that the population
—"plosion there will tend to dimin-
i-h the quantitative significance of
the Jewish communities and make
their marginality with regard to
the majority even more pronounc-
ed. There is no immigration of
Jews to Latin America and the
trend is in fact toward emigration,
he said.
Dr. Lerner said that violence,
which is part and parcel of the
Latin American scene today "is
seldom directed against Jews as
such, except in the case of the
radical right lunatic fringe., But,
being a minority sector, Jews are
naturally more sensitive and ex-
posed to violence and disorder."
Chile Jews Safe,
Leader States
NEW YORK (JTA) — Gil Sinay,
chairman of the Representative
Committee of the Jewish commun-
ity in Chile. told a seminar of the
American Jewish Committee that
Chile's 35,000 Jews felt very much
at home in that country but were
keenly interested in the welfare of
Israel and the fate of Jews every-
where.
Smay. a lawyer and professor of
financial law at the University of
Chile, and a native of that country,
reported that most Chilean Jews
were engaged in industry or the
professions.
Like their Christian counterparts,
some left the country when the
left-wing
coalition of President
Salvador Allende took over, fear-
ing that a Marxist regime might
affect them unfavorably.
However, when It became evi-
dent that Jews as Jews were
not threatened by the Allende
regime, he added, a number of
them returned to Chile. "Com-
munity leaders . . have urged
their fellow Jews, as good
Chilean citizens, to take political
changes in stride. Moreover, the
fact that many Jews hold gov-
ernment posts lends stability to
