Beth Din Advises
Divorce Lawyers
of Need for -`Get'

The Beth Din of the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis of Metropolitan
Detroit (Vaad Harabonim) is con-
cerned at the "increasing number
of family tragedies" resulting
when a Jewish woman, after re-
ceiving a legal divorce, remarries
without obtaining the Jewish "get"
(divorce).
The Beth Din, or rabbinical
court, stated that according to
Jewish law a woman who has not
obtained a Jewish divorce is still
considered the wife of her first
husband and any children born of
a second marriage are illegitimate.
The statement continued:
"We. therefore, take this oppor-
tunity in appealing to all indivi-
duals who may be involved in
handling a divorce for a couple of
th? Jewish faith, please make
them aware of the situation and
the tragic consequences if they
do not obtain the Jewish 'get'
(divorce)."
The Beth Din. established to
centralize all matters pertaining to
Jewish law in the Detroit COM-
munitv. can be reached by calling
559-5005, or Rabbi Leizer Levin,
head of the Beth Din, 557-6828.
