Altmann Allegedly
Admits Killing Nuns
While SS Head

SAO PAULO (JTA)—Naturali-
ized Bolivian businessman Klaus
Altmann told a Sao Paulo newspa-
per that Nazi SS men under his
command executed nuns in Lyons,
France during World War II while
he was SS chief in Lyons under the
name of Klaus Barbie.
The paper, 0 Esatdo de Sao
Paulo, said Altmann admitted going
with SS men to a resistance camp
and killing all of the resistance
workers. The paper quoted Alt-
mann as saying that a small arse-
nal was found at a convent near
Lyons.
Meanwhile in Vienna, Nazi hunt-
er Simon Wiesenthal called on
France to exert pressure on Bolivia
to extradite Altmann.
Wiesenthal said that evidence
involving Altmann's children fur-
ther indicates that Klaus Altmann
is Klaus Barbie. He said that
Rarbie's children have the same
Christian names and are the same
age as Barbie's.
He also said old photographs of
Barbie had been compared with
Altmann and "the physiognomy is
the same. You can see things you
cannot change, the form of the
face. etc."
Wiesenthal said that Altmann's
son. Klaus, suddenly disappeared
two months ago from Hamburg,
where he worked for the Bolivian
maritime company, when it was
discovered who he was.

Universities Must Be
Fiscally Responsible

1ERUSALEM (JTAi — Yigal
Alton, the deputy premier and
minister of education, said that
the financial difficulties of Israeli
universities were largely of their
own making and that they could
not expect the government to hail
them out unless they adopted poli-
cies of fiscal responsibility.
Alton spoke at the beginning of
a Knesset debate on the financial
straits in which most Israeli in-
stitutions of higher learning find
themselves. The government has
been covering about half of the
universities' budgets for the past
two-three years through grants.
Alton said the universities
could not decide, by themselves,
how much money to soend and
then appeal to the cabinet for
aid when they run into money
troubles.
He said the Israeli tax-payer
as well as the donor from abroad
had the right to ask whether the
funds were being spent wisely, not
in terms of academic freedom but
in terms of social, economic, edu-
cational and pedagogic require-
ments.
Alton stressed that the govern-
ment's higher education council and
its proposed-grants committee
would not interfere in course syl-
labuses or appointments. But it
has every right to interfere when
the question is one of opening
new faculties or departments, the
minister said.

universities' current deficits but at
the same time would make cer-
taM demands on the schools.

the Sunday News magazine as

losing their Yiddishkeit in a secular dominated society.

As a matter of conscience we dare not permit the Russian Jew to suf-
fer the same spiritual fate as the Sephardic Jews cf the earlier Aliyos,
when tens of thousands relinquished the tradition of their parents be- .
cause so few cared. The "Black Panthers" in Israel today are the le-
rat••• of this apathy. We dare not permit this tragic history to repeat
itself.

RUSSIAN IMMIGRANT RESCUE FUND

the major Orthodox rescue agency sponsored and directed by the
nation's foremost Torah scholars and volunteer laymen, has already
established:

TORAH COMMUNITY CENTERS — Used by the new immigrants to gather, learn and pray in a true
Torah atmosphere. The centers are particularly beneficial for the youth to keep them off the streets and
away from-secular influences.
ADDITIONAL
CLASSROOMS — New classroom space in religious schools was established to accommo-

date hundreds of immigrant children who need special attention.
• RELIGIOUS ULPANIM — In more than a half dozen cities, special ulpanim for both men and women
teach the immigrants Hebrew, conducted by observant teachers, who instill in the new immigrant. a
desire to continue their religious traditions.
KINDEGARTENS
— Specially equipped kindergartens, geared to cope with the language barriers and

unique needs of the Soviet Georgian children, wereopened for pre-school children.
