dotted Nations, apologized to Dick'
Casco for canceling out of his
ABC TV talk show after agreeing
to appear with Rabbi Moir Kahan,
chairman of the Jewish Defense
League
In a leper to Cat ett, the former
congressman conceded that he had
agreed to do the show but sub
sequently "did an in depth che,k"
with "certain responsible, highly
respected leader; of national Jew -
sh organizations" who convinced
him that ''any move by me that
would have even the slightest ap-
pearanee of giving recognition our
credence to Kahane would damage
the serious productive and legal
efforts that they and thousands of
their (elicits Jews have been mak-
ing to alleviate the suffering of
their brothers iin the Sov iv!
Union i "
Bush explained that while it had
been his original intention to
"forcefully" repudiate MI, policy
in Rabbi Kahane's presence, he
became convinced after speaking
with the Jewish leaders that he did
not want to "iose any standing
whatsoever to Mr. Kahane."

U.S. Cultural Center
in Jerusalem Vandalized

JERUSALEM (JTA t—Police are
investigating vandalism at the
American Cultural Center here.
Plate glass windows were smash-
ed, and slogans calling for a Viet
Cong Victory" and likening the
U.S to Nazi Germany were paint-
ed on the walls. The foreign mini-
stry expressed regrets to the U.S.
Embassy.
Police said they had no infor-
mation to link the vandalism with
an anti-U.S. demonstration outside
the Cultural Center by about 60
followers of the left-wing SIMI,
Matzpen, and the New Communist
Party. The demonstrators had a
police permit and dispersed peace-
fully afterwards.
Police said they had no idea
whether the vandals were Israelis
or Americans.

This is a "matter of deepest
conscience," Rush wrote, adding
in a postcript that the arrests in
Lido Beach, I-1. of four
alleged JBLers for reputedly
planning to blow up the Soviet
estate at Glen Cove indicated "the
kinds of activities that Kahane
by his conduct condones" but
that other Jewish leaders deem
"outrageously irresponsible."

The alleged plot by reputed mem-
bers of the Jewish Defense League
to bomb the Long Island residence ,
was condemned as a "shocking
development" by Mai Broth Presi-
dent David M. Blumberg. Addres-
sing the annual convention of Bnai
Bath's Caribbean District, Blum-
berg said that the plot. "if true.
exposes the deplorable, self-defeat-
ing tactics of those who advocate
this kind of senseless violence."
"The outrage," he told 300 dele-
gates. "is compounded by the fact
that President Nixon is in Moscow
at this very moment seeking to
establish a basis for peaceful co-
existence and to safeguard the
human rights of Jews in the Soviet
Union '•
Four persons were arrested in
the Lido Beach, 1.1., Jewish Center
o here authorities said the suspects
were assembling two fragmenta-
tion bombs. All were charged with
possession of explosives and con-
piracy to bomb the Soviet resi-
dence.
A JDL spokesman denied that
the suspects, three students and
one unemployed, were members
of his group.

In Montreal, Abie Ingher, 23,
national coordinator of the Stu-

favor of Soviet Jewry to United
Nations Secretary General Kurt
Waldheim, who was addressing
the Canadian UN Association
banquet.
Iniber. who was accompanied by
two students, tried to convey to
the secretary general the feelings
of the Jewish community when the

The 2.500 Jews in Sukhumi, a
town of 40.000 in Soviet Georgia, Soviet Union.
are experiencing fewer difficulties
than Jews in other Soviet cities,
Jewish sources reported.
Most have applied for exit per-
mits to go to Israel, and Soviet of-
ficials in the visa office treat the
applicants with courtesy and even
help them fill out their application
forms before filing them.
Jewish emigrants from Georgia
encounter difficulties with the au-
