RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
it opyright 1972, JTA Inc.)

As the Torah is removed
from the ark and carried
around the congregation and
to the platform fry-n which
it is read. Jewish tradition
5535 desirous that the wor-
shippers he aware of its ap-
proaching presence so that
they might rise and give
due respect to this venerable
oajeet. While in a larger
con2regation the movement
of the Torah through the
aisles may not be easily visi-
ble, the tinkling of the bells
while the scroll is carried
would suffice to make all
aware of its presence.
Some relate this practice
to the biblical requirement
for bells to be attached to
,arments of the high priest
who entered the Holy of
Holies once -a year on the
Day of Atonement. Since no
one could go along with him,
some symbol was necessary
to keep the populance out-
side cf the Holy of Holies
aware of his activities.
Should he have failed in his
ddties, death might have oc-
curred. The tinkling of the
bells while the high priest
moved to and fro during his
duties in the Holy of Holies

Torah scrolls require a
I
mantle to coser them when
they are not in use.
Generally speaking, in Jew-
ish tradition, that which is
holy and sublime is covered
of respect and adoration.
While the Torah is said to
relate and to be a Dart of
the life of every Jew,
a
svmbol of reverence and
dignity is -nevertheless re-
quired lest it he forgotten
that it is the work' of the
Almighty and not subject to
the careless tampering of hu-
man desire. Some say that
this is the reason for the
tablecloth which is put over
the table, especially on
the Sabbath. The Jewish ta-
ble is considered to be a
representation of the Altar
in the ancient temple. It re-
ceives its die nits and even
some form of reverence by
being covered so that man
approacht, the table with a
certain reserve of the spirit
when he eats.
