He Directs Israel's Shaare Zedek
the 'Hospital With a Heart

David Maeir hasn't seen the film
"Hospital" with its devastatin;
picture of life in the urban medi-
cal center, but he's well aware of
what the film is all about.
He has seen at first hand the
problems faced in a depersonal-
ized hospital, and the American-
born doctor is determined to avoid
the same pitfalls in the medical
center he directs Shaare Zedek
of Jerusalem.

In short, Dr. Maeir intends to
preserve Shaare Zedek's reputa-
tion as Israel's "hospital with a
heart."

Dr. Maeir was in Detroit last
week to promote efforts for
Shaare Zedek, which is halfway
toward its goal of $18,000,000 for
a new medical center. Needs of
a growing Jerusalem population
have far outgrown the' present
facility, more than 70 years old
and without adequate bed space
and up-to-date equipment.

The Detroit Friends of Shaare
Zedek have undertaken to - endow
kidney dialvsis facilities, a unit
'which Dr. Maeir describes as s ital
to the new' center

Dialysis is an enormously ex
pensive operation, but its exist
ence means the difference between
life and death for the kidney-di,
eased patient Dr. Maeir guesses
that in Israel there are about 80
to 100 patients on dialysis treat-
ment at any pne time. There is no
cure but researchers at Shaare
Zedek are not giving up the fight.

Many psychological factors are
attendant to dialysis treatment,
and Shaare Zedek is well aware
of the necessity for providing the
proper mental atmosphere for the
patient, as well as the machinery
for his physical well being.
Dr. Maeir frequently stresses the
human factor in the medical equa-
tion "I worked for many years
in American hospitals, and I've
seen what goes on A woman comes
in with a hie belly, and the first
thine they ask is, 'Are you mar-
Such nuestions can wait My
staff treats the patient first. And
we admit all patients, regardless
of financial status

Many issues that confront the
medical profession today . can be

answered from a uniquely Jewish
perspective that places great em
phasic on human life', Dr Maeir
feels. "There' is a clear moral im-

perative to make every plausible
effort to maintain human life "
he said, "Euthanasia is morally
reprehensible. -

He' (1 01. 5 not consider it a ''plaus-
ible effort" to transport a natient
to another country on the 1,000,000-
to-one chance that his life may
be saved. Nor does he consider it
merciful to prolong a life by at-
taching countless tubes and appur-
tenances to the patient even though
he is apparently dying. "We must
Use
every means with reason to
maintain a life with dignity." he
said, " bait we must also allow' a
man to die with dignity."

Dr. Maeir describes cryogenics
-the freezing of a live body for
revival at some future time - as
"off beat." But he concedes that
"if a child is suffering from leu-
kemia. we must try to preserve
that child's life with every means
possible,"

lie saw nothing counter to Jewish
law in cryogenics, "but it raises
other questions. Do you say kadish
over the body' Do you sit shiva in
refrigeration'"

Dr. Maeir's concern for human
life carries over into the abor•
tion issue. Ile accepts the tradi-
tionalist, halakhic, view that an
abortion is to be performed only
if the birth of a child represents
.a significa..t danger to the life
of the mother.
Arguing that it is Israel's goal
to enlarge and maintain a Jewish
majority, Dr. Maeir terms libera-
lized abortion "bad politics, had
religion and bad nationalism."
