This trove of Judaica was un-
earthed late in the last century.
Almost 250.090 documents had
been stored in a concealed cham-
ber at the Forstat Synagogue in
Cairo since the 7th Century.
"Geniza" means "stored away"
in Hebrew, and the manuscripts
were acquired by Archimandrite
Antonin Kapustin, a Russian priest
who served in the Holy I.and in
1E05 until his death in HIM.

The missing talmudic fragments,
which dealt with the Sabbath, Rosh
ltashana. S u k k o t and ketub-
has (marriage contracts), complet-
ed the Leningrad talmudic material
which is now part of the microfilm
library collection at Dropsie. The
Dropsie collection of Geniza mate-
rial from the Soviet Union is the
only one of its kind in the West
and is being used by scholars the
world over.
