Medical Abortions
Increase as German
Measles Hit Israel

I Easing Psoriasis
JERUSALEM (JTA) - An epi-
demic of German measles during
the past two months has brought
about a rise of between 30-50 per
cent in the number of medical
abortions performed in Israeli hos-
pitals, it was reported.
Recently the mother of a de- •
formed infant brought suit against
her physician whom she accused
of failing to diagnose German
measles during her pregnancy
and consequently did not recom-
mend abortion. •
Medical abortions are legal in
Israel and free for members of
the sickfunds.
Abortions for non-medical rea-
sons are illegal but no doctors
have been prosecuted in recent -
years for performing them unless
they acted negligently or con-
travened another law.
Goren Appeals for Full •1
Jewish Education in U.S.
NEW YORK (JTA) - Rabbi
Shlomo Goren, chief rabbi of Tel
Aviv and former chief chaplain
of Israel's armed forces-and a
leading contender for the post of
Ashkenazic chief rabbi in Israel-
in a talk to leaders Of the Ameri-
can Zionist Federation called the 1
period of the last 21 months dur-,
ing which the cease fire has pre-;
vailed between Israel and Egypt ,
to be ''the most significant 21
months in Jewish history since the
Diaspora began."
He called the development
during these past months in-
cluding the aliya from Russia
and America, evidences of the
"beginnings of the fulfillment
of prophecy."
Rabbi Goren appealed to the
leadership of the American Zionist
movement to see to it that -Jew-
ish children are not deprived of.
a full Jewish education" and that.
steps should be taken "to estab-
lish a solid chain of Jewish
schools throughout the United •
States, which remains the greatest
reservoir of Jewry for the political
and spiritual support necessary
for the survival of Israel."
He appealed for increased ,
American aliya, adding, "if you •
find it too difficult to come, at
least send us your children."
Replying to a question from
Rabbi Israel Miller, president of
the AZF, dealing with the "quality
of Jewishness of the Soviet im-
migrants," Rabbi Goren disclosed
that "the percentage of mixed
marriages and assimilation among
the Russian Jews is lower than
from other countries from which
aliya is coming."

EIN KAREN!. Jerusalem - The
waters of the Dead Sea, for cen-
turies a symbol of lifelessness and
sterility, are bringing health to
sufferers Fran psoriasis, a chronic
skin disease.
Scientists of the Hadassah-He-
brew University Medical Center
have been conducting research for
15 years at Ein Bokek. on the Dead
Sea, into the effect on skin diseases
of immersion in the hot springs
of EM Bokek, as well as in the
Dead Sea itself. -
As to why Ein B o k ek aids
psoriasis suffers, ''We do not
know the answer yet," said Prof.
Felix Sather, head of the depart-
ment of dermatology at the Hadas-
sah-Hebrew University Medical
Center.
"We know that the Fin Bokek
springs contain a number of
elements which could be bene-
ficial, among them a high sul-
phur content and radium as a
gas. We do not know whether
these minerals have any special
effect."
. Dr. Sagher did note the psy-
chological benefits for staying at
the Dead Sea. The land and cli-
mate "all contribute to a mood of
serenity and relaxation."
Regardless of the reasons for
recovery, the results have proved
to be so good that Rekreadan, a
Danish rest cure association funded
by the Danish National Health
Insurance Authority, is sending
patients in groups of 40 to two
new luxury hotels at Ein Bokek.
These hotels are fully occupied
during 10 months of the year, and
two more luxury hotels are under
construction, with the encourage-
ment of the Israel Ministry' of
Tourism.
