Where Were Leaders
on Soviet Jewry Day?

Editor, The Jewish News'
April 28 was a very special day
for Jews in the United States.
Solidarity Sunday was our oppor- I
tunity to petition the government
by our presence
at meetings
throughout the country. Organizers
had hoped that large gatherings
would influence the President to
speak with Soviet leaders in be-
half of Russian Jewry.
Less than 2.000 Jew's participat-
ed from the metropolitan Detroit
area in what will he interprided as
an apparent indifference toward
the plight of one-quarter of our
12000.000 people,
I place this failure at the feet of
our lay community leaders who
were noticeably absent. "Follow
me'' is the eloquent cry of real
leadership, and leadership demands
more than fund-raising. Sunday
was quite literally a day to stand
up and be counted and we will not
, soon again have as timely an op-
I portunity to give witness to the
unity' of our people

The drug habit, said Dr. Edel-

foreign students. The extent of it
in Israel, however, is a far cry
from the epidemic proportions it
has reached in the United States.
All indications point to a fur-
ther increase in the use of drugs,
