Jack Faxon of Detroit has requested that the Federal Communications Commission con- , duct a full and prompt investiga- tion into the use of the telephone systems to disseminate messages ' of hate and terror. In a letter to Dean Burch. chair- ! man of the commission, Sen. Faxon, a Democrat, cited the exis- tence of pre-recorded telephone ' hate messages sponsored by the National Socialist White People's Party (formerly the Nazi Party) as the basis of his concern. Faxon pointed out that by dial- ing a certain telephone number in the metropolitan area, a person— . , whether by choice or as the result of an innocent appearing adver- tisement or leaflet—is subjected to a brief yet hateful message. "It is most shocking that four- letter words are deemed profane. yet urging people to kill Jews and , Blacks is permissible," Faxon ' said. "When the Federal Communica- tions Commission was instituted more than 40 years ago." he said, • "its principal assignment- was to guard against such obvious abuses of the various forms of communi- cations. It is remiss in failing to take affirmative and decisive ac- tion in this case." Faxon said that despite protests by concerned civic, religious and ethnic organizations to the Michi- gan Public Service Commission, and the Federal Communications Commission, the telephone number is still in operation.
