Jewish Past, Present Blended
in `Only Fools Are Sad' at Center

Few convey the old-new charac-
ter of Israel with greater imagina-
tion and charm than the six young
performers of "Only Fools Are
Sad" now at the Jewish Center.
A meld of traditional hasidic
parables and tales with the up-
beat of folk rock, the revue could
easily have ended up a mishmash.
Surprisingly, owing to the skills
of writer Dan Alrnagor and direc-
tor Yossi Yzraely, it is a well
blended whole.
Using guitars as almost their
sole prop, the sextet celebrates life
in all its joy and pain — much
as the hasidim did in the darkest
days of czarist Russia. To be sure,
there is little to resemble hasidim
among the performers, dressed as
they are in the garb found on any
college campus.
But the clothing is no accident—
it is as if to say, Our message
knows no bounds of time and
place. With gentle humor, the
learned rabbis and simple folk of
the small villages of Eastern Eur-
ope (all stories begin with "In
a small village . . .") come alive.
Take the rabbi who describes to
his wife how he urged his congre-
gants who have plenty to share
with those who have nothing. "And
what happened?" she asks. "I
convinced those who have noth-
ing," he replies. "Now I must
convince those who have plenty."
Or the two young Jews who

are drafted into the Russian
army and are forced to eat pork.
What shall we do' they ask the
rabbi. If you must eat it, you
must, he says. "But try not to
suck on the bones."
The simple faith that allowed
humble men to talk with God was
not unique to Tevya, the Dairy-
man. Haim, the Goose-herder (por-
trayed by the vivacious Galia Is-
hay) also speaks with his God and
even dares to offer his services to
herd God's geese "for free."
What became of these good men?
We are reminded with a jolt that
most went to their death in the
concentration camps, but harbor-
ing an inner strength that the Nazis
could not crush.
Shlomo Nitzan and Danny Lit-
anny are the master story tellers
in this revue (their roles in the i
powerful "Gedaliah, the Tar
Maker - and "The Rabbi Who
Promised to Wait" are among the
highlights of the evening), but
the entire company — also includ-
ing Miss Ishay, Michal Noy, Don
Maseng and David Zakai — well
deserved the standing ovation they
received Sunday evening. Other
performances are scheduled for
8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
If one or two numbers appear
out of place, like the irreverent
"Drinking Song," we are reminded
quickly that these people were not
pious ascetics, they were the blue-
collar workers of their day. Yet
surely God must have loved these
simple Jews, else — as Tevya
pointed out — He would not have
made so many of them. —C.D.
