Will Sally Priesand be the first woman rabbi in the United States? The debate goes on. Jacob Rader Marcus, director of the American Jewish Archives, is of the opinion that Miss Priesand is the first woman in the U.S. to be formally ordained. However, he concedes that there may have been other female "rabbis" who were not ordained. An example is Mrs. Gilbert (Beatrice) Sanders of Trinidad, Colo., who has been officiating as rabbi of her congregation, Temple Aaron, for many years. Detroit advertising man Leonard Simons. who prompted the com- ment from Dr. Marcus, suggested that "lots of our early rabbis were not 'ordained' but were still rabbis. Rabbi means 'teacher' — so why shouldn't Mrs. Sanders have the distinction of being the first wom- an rabbi in America?" He added: "If the Bible says the Jews are all a family of priests— then why can't anyone qualified by knowledge and experience be entitled to the title of 'rabbi with- out being ordained? All the rabbis mentioned in the Bible or Talmud were not ordained." ,dt know Joltaaic (ta t wet– di tL cam. teG a,bfrat i .
