Birmingham Temple to Sponsor Fair
Featuring Appalachia Patchwork Art

The art of quilting, as practiced
for more than 100 years in Appa-
lachia. will be brought to the De-
troit area this weekend for an
Appalachian Patchwork Fair at
Birmingham Temple.

prise, called Cabin Creek Quilts.
The quitters are mostly widows
of coal miners living on small
Social Security pensions. What they
earn from quilting buys the neces-
sities their pensions don't cover.

Hours of the fair will he 10 a.m
9 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p m.
Sunday. •

Since Thibeault's arrivel, Cabin
Creek has sold quilts to major
stores in such cities as New York,
Boston. Chicago and Palm Beach.
Yet, the quilts still are made in
the cabins of their creators.
Cabin Creek quitters stick to au-
thentic patterns handed down for
generations. They will work in col-
ors a customer orders, and on re-
quest will fashion scatter pillows,
wall hangings and patchwork host-
ess gowns, as well as quilts. Spe-
cial orders will be taken at the
temple and completed in 8-10
weeks.
Refreshments will he served at
the fair. admission to which is
free. Miss Anderson will play
country favorites on her autoharp.

Wendy Blau. a Detroiter who
worked in the poverty belt of Appa-
lachia in West Virginia as a volun-
teer for VISTA. is assisting in the
arrangements for the dernonstra-
Lon, exhibit and sale. Coordinator
is Mrs. Rita Zissman. a temple
member.

Another Michigan volunteer,
Colleen Anderson, will come in
for the event, along with a quilt-
er
and Jamie Thibeault, the
VISTA worker who discovered
the work being done by Appa-
lachia women and turned their
skills into a cooperative enter-

Batia Zy-tnicki, the wife of the
Israeli artist Mark Zytnicki, has' '
asked Mrs. Philip Shiner of De-
troit, during the latter's visit to!
Israel. to help her locate her fam-
ily in the United States.

According to Mrs. Shiner, the
Zytnickis are not asking for any
financial or other help but are
making the search only for the
sake of reuniting with members of
the family from whom they have
been separated.
Mrs. Zytnicki states that her
maiden name was Levine, daughter
of Alter, and that she was born in
Uzde tor lode) in the province of
Minsk, and that all who are being
sought came from that city. Her
uncle. Gusta Goldman, who was
horn 87 years ago, came to thg
United States in 1905. His children
with whom she seeks to make con-
tact are Les( Goldman, age about
50. who lived in New Jersey, and
h's sister, May Goldman, now
about 55 or 56. She is also looking
for a cousin. Barns Meishke, who
is about 60 and who lived in Cali-
fornia.

Workmen's Circle
to Commemorate
Ghetto Uprisino ,

The 29th commemoration of the
Warsaw- Ghetto Uprising will be
observed by the Workmen's Circle
Michigan District 8:30 p.n?. Wed-
nesday at the Workmen's Circle
Center.
This program, to be presented
in both English and Yiddish. will
immortalize the memory of the
Six Million and will pay homage
to the heroism of the Jews of
the Warsaw Ghetto.
There will be recitations by Ei-
leen Israel, vocal selections by
Simon Klachefsky, !Ionia Boren-
stein and others. There also will
be a traditional candle lighting ob-
servance.
The program was prepared by
the Workmen's Circle Cultural
Committee of Detroit.
The public is invited at no
charge.

GERMAN SOCIETY FOR
INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTAND-
ING, INC., is organizing its second
annual summer exchange program
for students age 16-21. The partici-
pants will be placed with German
families for four weeks, then be
allowed to travel throughout cen-
tral Europe. After six weeks, the'
Americans return home with a
German partner to live in the U.S.
