Dr. Katsh's 'Scroll of Agony,' Diary
of Warsaw Ghetto, Is Dramatized

"Scroll of Agony" by Dr. Abra-
ham I. Katsh, based on the War-
saw Ghetto diary of Chaim A.
Kaplan and which has excited read-
ers the world over in its transla-
tions in many languages, has now
been dramatized as a play.
The diary, originally written in
Hebrew, was first published in this
country in 1965 by the Macmillan
Company and has since been pub-
lished in eight countries, including
including the major countries of
Israel and Japan.
Permission to dramatize the book
was given by Dr. Katsh, president
of Dropsie University, to the Na-
tional Women's League of the Unit-
ed Synagogue of America. The.

On April 19-21, the drama de-
partment of HENRY FORD HIGH
SCHOOL -will present the Broad-
way musical "West Side Story."
The performances on Wednesday
and Friday evenings will begin
at 8 p.m. There will be a 2,30 p.m.
matinee Thursday. MRS. SHIR-
LEY SHAPIRO is director and
producer. Featured in the cast
Frank DiLaura. Betsy Edelman.
Richard Ger be r, Doug Kahn,
Marion Kleinman, Leslye Kopel-
man, Perry Rosett, Jeff Shovitz
and Stewart Sternberg. Jeff S'win-
kin is stage manager and Debbie

ling, is titled, "Diary of the War-
saw Ghetto."
Chaim A. Kaplan, a Polish intel-
lectual and noted Hebraica scholar,
died
His diary was a day-by-day jour-
nal begun in September 1939, on
the day that Germany declared
war on Poland, Concealed in a ker-
osine can and buried on a farm
near Warsaw, the diary was not
discovered until 1962. with other
missing pages found later in Israel.
The diary, now complete, gives the
most detailed account of events
and activities of the 500,000 Jews
imprisoned behind the walls of
the Warsaw Ghetto.
While the script was prepared
for sisterhoods affiliated with the
National Women's League, per-
mission for use also will be given
to other organizations. It is pre-
pared especially for use to com-
memorate the anniversary in April
of the uprising of the Jews in the
Warsaw Ghetto.
