Of Matzo Ball Soup
and Price Hikes
Increasing. costs of food have
made the news in more ways than
one.
When George Meany walked off
the Federal Pay Board, he charged
that the price commission was
failing in its job of holding price
levels, and then gave examples
of "hidden" price increases: •
"Mrs. Adler's matzo ball soup
was famous for years and years
with four matzo balls in a can,"
he said ''Now, same can, same
price, but only three matzo balls.
This is the sort of thing I mean."
One local food store executive
—Nathan P. Fink, board chairman
of Great Scott supermarkets — an-
nounced a 30-day moratorium on
price increases in the chain's 44
area stores. He said it was hoped
that food suppliers would be pres-
sured into price reductions be-
cause Great Scott
will publicly
list supplier increases during the
"o-day freeze period.
