The small 30-page pamphlet en- titled "Passover—More Than Free- dom" was written by Dr. Evelyn Garfiel. The author explains why the holiday which began as a "nature festival" has acquired more meaning. Dr. Garfiel describes how it all began and who wrote the Hagada that is read at the seder. She re- fers to Exodus 12:8 and 13:8 for the sources. Also: she quotes Dr. Louis Finkelstein to show that while major attention had been given to Jesus' observance of the seder in 30. CE that there is proof of its having been observed three cen- turies before the Christian era. The hymns and songs, . the Four Questions, the matzo sub- stituting for the ancient sacri- fice—all aspects of the festival are reviewed. Passover is described as "more than freedom" because "it is at once a rich treasury and a con- cretization of the many value ideas of Judaism." Burning Bush Press also issued this week a pamphlet on "Avot- The Ethics of the Fathers" by NEW • YORK—A first step in im- plementing a decision by the or- ganized Jewish community of North America was taken with the appointment of Prof. Leon A. Announcement of the insti- tute's first director was made il of Jewish Federa- at the Counc tions and Welfare Funds'- board of directors meeting at the Wal- dorf-Astoria Hotel Saturday. Its North American headquarters will open in Boston May 15. Professor Jick will be 6 on leave of absence from -his ad- ministrative duties at Brandeis University. Charged with developing inno- vative projects to strengthen the quality of Jewish life and given approval of a $2,250,000 "risk capital fund" to carry out this charge, the institute will focus on the total fabric of Jewish life. Among the areas of concern for which projects will be in- itiated are the erosion of fatu- ity life; and Jewish education, including the relation of Jewish teaching and values to current issues and problems. Additionally, the institute will place special emphasis on local programs initiated, conducted and financed directly by individual communities with national guid- ance and evaluation by the insti- tute. , SPORTCOATS Friday, March 24, 1972-17 12- Mile tat -Royal A Happy Pesach To All Our Friends and Customers -• 8 . ► I 11 "Live A Little" MILE ROAD COO LI .
