Senators Repudiate Anti-Israel Ad
NEW YORK (JTA)—A survey
by the Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith has found that at least
eight of the 14 U.S. senators men-
tioned in an anti-Israel newspaper
advertisement repudiate both the
ad and what they gall the implica-
tion that they endorsed it.
The names of the senators, who
were described in the ad as hav-
ing shown "courage and fore-
sight" by having "voted no on
credits for Phantoms," -were listed
in a box at the bottom of the page.
The buyer of the ad. Alfred M.
Lilienthal, is an outspoken Jewish
anti-Zionist who is chairman of the
newsletter "Middle East Perspec-
tive."
Sen. Harold E. Hughes (D.,
Ia.), noted he has "consistently

The commission also called for
an end "without delay-" to the
"unjust, illegal and immoral
war" in Vietnam.
It attacked Nixon's busing pro-
posal -on grounds that such legis-
lation "in the hands of an adven-
turous CongreSs could result in a
total reversal of the Bill of Rights."

"I have no intention of changing
this policy."
Sen. Allen J. Ellender (D., La.)
commented: "The appearance of
my name does not espouse my
support for the position adver-
tised elsewhere on the page. I
voted against the particular pro-
posal because it duplicated funds
which I knew were included in an-
other bill."
Sen. J. William Fulbright (D.,
Ark.), a leading opponent of for-
eign military aid, sent the ADL
copies of his speeches and said
he had not been consulted on the
use of his name "nor made aware
in advance of plans for publica-
tion" of the ad; but he did not
comment directly on the text of-
the ad.
Sens. Philip A. Hart and Mar-
garet Chase Smith had repudiated
the ad earlier. Others replying to
the ADL were Sens. George D.
Aiken, Lee Metcalf, Milton R.
Young and John Sherman Cooper,
all of whom denounced the ad.

JERUSALEM .(JTA) — Foreign
ministry officals had no comment
—and professed no knowledge—of
a joint statement issued by the
the Bangladesh leader Sheikh
Mujib Arahman and Soviet Premier
Aleksei N. Kosygin calling on Is-

was published in Moscow.
Israel is still waiting for a Bang-
ladesh acknowledgement of
Israel's letter sent last month an-
nouncing its recognition of the new
state.
Observers here believe that the
fact that Bangladesh is a Moslem
state combined with its pro-Soviet
