Hits 'Temple-Jew •
Reference

Editor, The Jewish News:
It was with distress that I read
the following sentence in an edi-
torial concerning Alfred Lilienthal
in your issue of March 3, 1972:
"We do not know whether he is a
Temple-Jew or whether the mere
mention of Israel in relation to
him turns off the human side of
his heritage."
Alfred Lilienthal is no less re-
pugnant to me than -he is to you.
Your strictures against him are
unquestionably deserved. However,
to say in the editorial "we do not
know whether he is a Temple-Jew
. . .• was a gratuitous insult to
liberal Jews everywhere and par-
ticularly in this city, the home of
`The Jewish News.' If memory
serves correctly, the term"Temple-
Jew" was originally used disdain-
fully of those Munich Jews who,
under the leadership of the "pro-
test Rabbiner," opposed the con-
vocation of the first Zionist Con-
gress in 1897 in that city. Possibly
that now obscure and forgotten
phrase was in your mind when you
wrote the editorial.
In view of the fervent support of
Israel given by every temple in
the city of Detroit, and in view of
the forceful opposition by Reform
national leadership to any anti-
Zionist expresion within its midst,
such an identification is a dread-
ful misstatement of realities.
Would you think to identify the
Neturai Karta, who have ex-
pressed themselves viciously con-
cerning the state of Israel, as
"shut-Jews?"
Refoim Judaism generally, and
the Reform Jews of Detroit espe-
cially, deserve better than at at
the hands of the man I believe to
be the best Anglo-Jewish weekly
editor in America. Whatever the
basis of this regrettable slur, I
think an apology from you is in
order. I have every confidence that
you are man enough to make it.
Respectfully,
RABBI MILTON ROSENBAUM
