JOHANNESBURG — There are

117,990 Jews in South Africa today.
according to figures made avail-
able to the South African Jewish
Board of Deputies from the 1970
census returns. The new figure of
117.990 represents an increase of
3,489 on the 1960 census figures
of 114,501 Jews.
Tabulation of all the figures
gathered in the census is not yet
complete, but a projection has been
made on the basis of a sample of
the census returns and this has
been made available to the board's
social research unit by the Gov-
ernment Bureau- of Statistics.
The new figures are listed ac-
cording to economic regions and
not (except in a few cases) by
individual towns. Generally they
show that:

In a statement, Rhine observed
that brokerage firms have been
"a particular problem for Sabbath
observers seeking employment.
We trust that the substantial
amount of money involved in this
matter will go a long way towards
opening the doors of economic op-
portunity in this and other sectors
of the economy to Orthodox Jews."
