Best Wishes - for a Happy & Joyous Passoyer

before negotiations with Egypt be-

Synagogue Alive, Rabbi Kelnitan Says-

After his half-day visit here, Dr.
Jarring proceeded to Geneva to
report to UN Secretary General
Kurt Wadeheim.
Sources speculated that Dr.
Jarring would .saggest submit-
ting a new questicassaire to Cairo
and Jerusalem to supplant his
Feb. 8, 1971 aide memoire which
demanded Israel's withdrawal:
According to the sources, he
may now tone down his earlier
demand and instead seek an Is-
raeli commitment that it does not
intend to annex any territories.
At the UN, eyebrows were raised
Monday when Dr. Jarring arrived
back in New York. A UN spokes-
man reported that Dr. Jarring and
Waldheim had agreed in Geneva
Sunday that the envoy's mission
continued to be "very useful," but
it was a fact that no Mid East
principals were in New York Mon-
day and none was immediately
due.
Waldheim was still fn Geneva,
with no announced plans to re-
turn here; Israeli Ambassador
Yosef Tekoah was in Israel and
not due to return here until this
weekend; and the arrival date of
the new Egyptian ambassador,
Esmat Abdel Maguid, was uncer-
tain, with an Egyptian spokesman
saying it might be around mid-
March.
American officials pointed out
that Dr. Jarring having conferred
with Israeli and Egyptian leaders
and with Waldheim in recent days,
would use the next few days in
New York for consultations with
U.S., British, French and Soviet
representatives.
Dr. Jarring told correspondents
on emerging from the premier's
office that
talks here had been
useful and that his mission would
continue.
WASHINGTON (JTA) —Official-
ly, the State Department says the
possibility of proximity talks look-
ing toward reopening the Suez
Canal remains alive, but unoffi-
cially, the department is under-
stood to agree with Egyptian Presi-
dent Anwar Sadat that the idea
is "a dead horse."
State Department spokesman
Charles Bray reiterated the de-
partment's long-held position in re-
plying to a newsman's question
about Sadat's reported comment
by. saying only "we remain avail-
able if the parties wish us to play
a role."
Bray refused to answer a ques-
tion on whether the U. S. has tem-
porarily deferred putting forward
the Idea of reopening the canal
pending Dr. Jarring's initiatives
for a full settlement.
Sadat was quoted in an• inter-
view with Newsweek Magazine as
rejecting an American proposal
that Joseph Sisco, the secre-
tary of state for the Near East,
serve as an intermediary at in-
direct talks in New York or else-
where between Egyptians and Is-
raelis.
"Insofar as the so-called 'proxi-
mity talks' or hotel talks with Mr.
Sisco are concerned, it's a dead
horse," a Newsweek senior editor,
Arnaud de Borchgrave, quoted
Sadat as saying.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Express-
ing strong disagreement with the
views held by some that the syna-
gogue is dying, Rabbi Wolfe Sel-
man, executive vice president of
the Rabbinical Assembly, said:
"American religious life has
reached a point of consolidation;
the period of synagogal growth is
over. But this does not mean that
the synagogue or Judaism in
America is dead or dying.
"The apathy of American Jews
toward their Judaism no longer
exists. rnstead, there is a hunger
for Jewish understanding and edu-
cation."
Pointing out that Jewry has "the
need for a creative diaspora" and
that American Jewry has "come
of age during the past 20 years,"
the rabbi took an optimistic. pic-
ture of current synagogal life in
the United States in an address
