Business in Luxury
Restaurants Drops Off

JERUSALEM _— Business in 1s..
rael's luxury restaurants report-
edly has dropped off -drastically
in recent weeks. In most res-
taurants, only two or three out of
15 or 20 tables are occupied during
peak- -hours. Restaurant owners
say that they have not experienced
such a slack period in years.
This sudden fall-off in restaurant
business is attributed to a number
of causes. One notable factor is
current public furor _ over tax-
deductible "business luncheons"
costing as much as $23.80 for two.
Finance Minister Pinhas Sa-
pir's recent boycott of a plush
Chamber of Commerce dinner
meeting resulted in that meeting
being moved from the Tel Aviv
Hilton Hotel to a more :modest
site. Publicity surrounding the
switch added to the negative
climate surrounding lavish" ex-
pense-account entertainment.
On instruction of the ministry
of, finance, civil servants currently
are forbidden to invite guests to
business luncheons — or to_accept
invitations to luxury restaurants.
Israeli businessmen now are
anxiously awaiting action on •end-
ing legislation limiting deductible
business expenses. Final drafts of
the bill include provisions totally
barring entertainment costs as tax-
deductible business expenses.

Rabbi Tanenbaum told the JTA

self from a proposal for the inter-

said that in that sense that is a
positive gain but he called the ref-

"sympathic" to them, also "un-
