Israel's foreign debt-51.333 per Melchior Says He Was Snubbed by Unterman COOPENHAGEN (JAI) — Chief Rabbi Brent Melchior of Denmark said that he was snu b b e d byi Israel's Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi , Isser Yehuda Unterman during his - visit to Israel last week. Rabbi Melchior said he had specifically requested a meeting with th 86-year-old Unterman to discuss recent allegations that con- versions performed by him were not strictly in accordance with re- ligious law. - Rabbi Melchior said he was shunted from one subordinate to another though Unterman knew of his presence in Israel. On the other hand. Rabbi Mel- ' chior said, he was received cordially by the Sephardic chief ' rabbi, Itzhak Nissim, by Chief ' Rabbi Shlomo Goren of Tel Aviv, and by Beersheba's chief rabbi, . M. Kuzlowski. All three "showed understanding" for his position, Rabbi Melchior said. (However, Rabbi Unterman, in a letter written by his secretary to Melchior, explained that he was at- tending a rabbinical congress in Milan.) During his visit he was received by President Zalman Shazar at his Jerusalem home. - Meanwhile, the JewiSh weekly Judisk Orientirung sharply criti- cized Israel's chief rabbinate for questioning the validity of Rabbi Melchior's conversions. The paper said that the Israeli rabbis .never even attempted to check the Danish conversions to determine whether or not they complied fully with halakha. However, 90 per cent of this consists of long-term loans, repayable over the course of 10 years or more.- - There will be no increase in the absolute rate of taxation. But rises in prices and salaries estimated at a minimum of 4 per cent are ex: pected to bring in 15 per cent more revenue in both direct and indirect taxes. If prices and wages rise beyond this level, it was indicated, taxes also will be increased. In addition, an added value tax, like that in many European countries, is con- templated and may be introduced at any time after Oct. 1.
