JERUSALEM—As a diamond ex-
porter, Israel occupies first place,
outstripping Belgium which always
ranked first in the world's diamond
polishing industry. Israel's diam-
ond exports in 1971 topped the
$265,000,000 mark.

importer of Israeli diamonds. In

'1972, $74,000,000 worth were ex-
ported to the U.S.—over $9,000,000
' more than in the preceding year.
After the 'U.S. comes Japan,
with diamond im port s to the
value of $29,500,000, and Hong
Kong a close runner-up with pur-
, chases of $29,300,000 worth. Bel-
. gium, until now the world's lead-
ing diamond manufacturer, in 1971
, purchased $28,000,000 worth of Is-
• raeli diamonds—$8,000,000 more
than in the preceding year.
The Israel Diamond Bourse at
Ramat Gan, one of the largest
buildings in the country, is al-
ready proving far too small to
house all the offices of the noun-
' try's diamond merchants. Two ad-
ditional wings shortly are to be
;erected.
