Circuit Court -Judge Victor J.
Baurit has urged the State Bar
of Michigan to prohibit candidates
for judicial office from accepting
campaign contributions from law-
yers or their spouses.
In a communication to Freder-
ick G. Buesser Jr., president of
the State Bar, Judge Baum said
public confidence in the courts
is undermined by "the relatively
widespread practice of raising
funds for judicial campaigns from
members of the legal profession.
The losing litigant who knows that
his opponent's lawyer is a cam-
paign contributor of the judge
is not likely to believe that he
had a fair trial before an impartial

decision maker."
Because "judges have special
leverage over lawyers," Judge
Baum added, "I would also urge
that judges who run for office
should be prohibited from solicit-
ing campaign funds from lawyers
either directly or indirectly."

Toward that end, he proposed
that the State Bar sponsor canons
of professional and judicial eth-
ics, and that the legislature spon-
