Look at Artichokes

Editor,: The Jewish News:
Sorry to take issue with you but
there is a grevious error in your
review of Charles Ranhofer's "The
Epicurean." Being an apikoyros I
note that you speak of the recipe
for Jerusalem artichoke as tradi-
tional. Traditional to whom? Cer-
tainly not the Jews or Jerusalem.
The so-called Jerusalem artichoke
is the tuber of a sunflower (Helian-
thus "tuberosus) native to North
Americi.- Severai names have been
attached to this plant: topinam-

Chavez' Union Sits Shiva
for Girl Killed Pickiting

WAKEFIELD, Mass. (JTA) —
The United Farm Workers Or-
ganizing Committee, AFL-CIO, ob-
served the traditional "shiva"—
the Jewish seven-day mourning
period—with the family of Nan
Freeman, an 18-year-old sociology
major who 'was killed Jan. 24 by
a hit-and-run driver in Belle Glade,
Fla.
Miss Freeman, who was attend-
ing_ New College in Sarasota, Fla.,
had joined the farm workers or-
ganizing drive in the sugar cane
fields and was picketing the Talis-
man Sugar Co. in Belle Glade when
she was fatally injured by what
witnesses claim was a company
truck.
Caesar Chavez, bead of the
union, composed mainly ef Mexi-
can-American farm workers, an-
nounced that it would observe
the Jewish mourning period.
Friends of the victim's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Milton Freeman, in-
dicated that the family would press
for an investigation of the incident
after the mourning period.
According to the friends, Capt.
Claude Tamil of the sheriff's de-
partment In Belle Glade has filed
no charges against the truck driv-
er whose vehicle struck Miss Free-
man and a Classmate of hers on
the picket line. The other girl was
injured but recovered.

Israel to Levy Income
Tax - in Golan Heights

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli
income tax will be levied on the
Israeli-adznirdstered Golan Heights.
It will make the"heights the only
area other than Israel proper and
East Jerusalem' to be governed
by Israeli law instead of that of
its pre-Six-Day War government.
After the war, Israel announced
that Egyptian law would continue
to be apjilied in the Gaza Strip
and Jordanian law on the West
Bank.
But the Golan Heights was
deserted by almost its entire
population during the war, and
now has a Jewish majority and
a Wm, not an Arab, minority,
with Israeli law having been
applied in stages.
Foreign Minister Abba Eban ex-
plained that Syria has failed to
accept Security Council Resolution
242. Therefore, he said, the Israeli
position regarding the heights dif-
fers from that Jan territories for-
merly governed, by Egypt and
Jordan, which have accepted the

Jews, Indians, Mormons
All Brothers, Reader Says

Editor, The Jewish News:
Regarding your Jan. 21 story
(Review, Page 52) stating that
American Indians are Jewish. The
Mormon Church teaches that true
American Indians are a race of
Jews who left Jerusalem in 600
BCE on ships coming to America,
and lost their identity and religion
somewhere around 500 C.E.
The Book of Mormons is the
origin and history of the American
Indians. The Book of Mormons,
page 455, teaches you are not to
hiss, spurn nor make game of the
• ews. The Mormon leaders believe
in the right of the Jewish people to
control Jerusalem.
American Indians are Israelis of
the tribe of Menasseh, brother of
Ephraim. Mormons are Israelis of
the tribe of Ephraim.
Sincerely,
LOUIS PODA

Israel Medal Depicts
Goldman Against WZO Jerusalem and ICnesset

WARSAW (JTA) The Folks-
timme, weekly organ of the Jewish
Social and Cultural Association, in
its current issue expresses sup-
port for Dr. Nahum Goldman,
president of the World Jewish
Congress, and condemns the World
Zionist Organization Executive for
withdrawing its invitation to him
to address the festive session of
the Zionist Congress.
The article states: "The ban on
Nahum Goldmann has wider im-
plications. It is connected with the
debate between those in favor of
evacuation and those who believe
that millions of Jews will remain in
the Soviet Union. Sanctions against
Goldman are an expression of
narrow-mindedness at the very
least."
Greetings to the national con-
ference of the Israel-Soviet Friend-
ship League in Tel Aviv were sent
by Edward Rather, chairman of
the Jewish Social and Cultural As-
sociation here, on behalf of the
association, and by Samuel Ten-
enblat, editor of Folkstimme, on
behalf of the newspaper collective.
Folkstimme is the association's
news weekly.
Tenenblat wrote in his message:
"We are with you today. We hope
for friendship between Israel and
the Soviet Union, and we con-
demn anti-Soviet propaganda."

COLPA Hails Passage
by Senate of Sabbath Bill-

NEW YORK (JTA) — Howard
Rhine, president of the National
Jewish Commission on Law and
Public Affairs, applauded the adop-
tion b ythe Senate of an amend-
ment to a pending Human Rights
bill that would protect Sabbath ob-
servers in employment.
The amendment, initially draft-
ed by COLPA vice-president Na-
than Lewin, would require employ-
ers to show that it would cause
an unreasonable hardship on their
business to hire or retain a Sab-
bath observer.

Refrain thy voice from weeping
