`Shattering Experience' Launched
Sophie Udell's Service to Survivors

NEW YORK For Sophie Udell,
recently elected president of
NYANA, the New York Xisocia-
lion for New Americans, what she
now is doing to aid refugees start-
ed with a vacation trip to Europe,
which turned into a "shattering ex-
perience."
It . was in 1947 that Edward M.
M. .Warburg, then chairman of
the Joint Distri•vic
butfon Commit- r-
tee,• asked Mr.
and Mrs. Jerome
3. Udell to go to
Poland, a coun-
try they had not
expected to visit,
and to, "take a
look" at the aid
being given to
Polish Jews who
had somehow sur- Mrs. Udell

later, Mrs: Udell still recalls that
,"shattering experience," which
changed not just her trip but her
life. The Udells saw not only the
ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto—"one
whole area of rubble, with nothing
alive in it except a few scaven-
gers"—but children's homes, hos-
pitals, soup kitchens and old age
homes. From Warsaw they went
on to meet other Jewish survivors
in Lodz, in Prague, Czechoslova-
kia, and in a DP Camp near
Milan, Italy.
Soon after her return, she was
elected chairman of the women's
division of the New York UJA.
Her continuing dedication to
helping "the people we had seen,
and others like them," has brought
her to the presidency of NYANA,
the UJA-supported agency which
settles and aids the greatest num-
ber of Jewish refugees and new-
comers to the United States, those
who come to live in New York
City.
