of Yiddish Dictionary

NEW YORK (JTA) — City Col-
lege's Institute of Yiddish Lexi-
cology has received $90,000 in
grants, $45,000 each from the Na-
tional Endowment for the Humani-
ties and the American Friends of
thet Hebrew University, it was
announced by Dr. R. E. Marshak,
president of City College.
The Institute or Yiddish Lexi-
cology is under the direction of
Prof. Nathan Susskind of the col-
lege's department of Germanic and
Slavic languages.
It was established at the col-
lege in 1965, for the purpose of
compiling a "Great Dictionary of
the Yiddish Language."

The third volume of the dic-
tionary will be issued this spring,
bringing the number of defini-
tions of Yiddish words covered
so far to 60,000. The entire dic-
tionary is expected to consist of
at least 10 volumes.

Work on the dictionary origin-
ally began long before World War,
II in Eastern Europe. However,
materials collected at that time
•were either lost or destroyed due
to the war. Present work dates
back to 1953 when a group of
distinguished academic and lay
leaders agreed, in cooperation with
the YIVO Institute for Jewish

The two delegations met at the

technical talks."

become followers of Buddhism."
All were males.
In reporting on the development,
Rabbi Zeldin said he had talked
to all six despite the fact that he
did not regard such departures
from Judaism by six college-age
kids "out of 400 to 500 in that age
bracket who belong to our congre-
gation" as marking a significant
trend. He explained, rather, that
he wanted to learn some of the
"common denominators about the

current bulletin of the Town and
Village Synagogue, a Conservative

Chile Loses Last Rabbi
to W. Berlin Synagogue I

SANTIAGO (JTA)—The sched-
uled departure next month of
Rabbi Egon Lubliner from this
city to become spiritual leader
of the Pestalozi Street Synagogue
in West Berlin will leave Chile's
community of 35,000 Jews without
a rabbi.

At one time there were five
rabbis — four in Santiago and
one in Valparaiso — but over a
number of years rabbis have
been leaving to take posts in
other countries.

The Jewish communal organiza-
tions have sent out distress signals
to Jewish communities in other
South American countries asking
them to help fill the vacuum.
There is some hope that the
rabbinical seminary in Buenos
Aires can send at least one rabbi

to Santiago which. has a Jewish
population of 30,000. There are

4,000 Jews in. Valparaiso.
