Mrs. t3eate laarsfe d, an anti-
Nazi activist and member of the
executive- of the French , League
Against Rat:bin and Anti-Semitism,
flevrto La Paz to try to persuade
Heilivian -- authorities to surrender
Barbie: •
She was received by the Bolivian
-interior minister, Mario - Adett
Zamora, in La Paz Wednesday.
His crimes include the deporta;
Lion of French Jews and the mur-
der of Jean Moulin, the first bead
of the French resistance- move-
ment during the Nazi occupation.
Barbie also is wanted for war
crimes committed in Holland dur-
ing World War II, it was learned
Tuesday. The Netherlands State
Institute for Documentation of
World War II disclosed that Barbie
was responsible for the deporta-
tion and death of at least 300
young Jewish refugees who had
found .a haven .in Holland before
the Nazi occupation of that coun-
try.
According to the documents,
the deportations occurred at the
end of 1940 or early in 1941. At
that time, Barbie was a member
of the SS Obsersturm Fuehrung
in Amsterdam. He reportedly or-
dered the arrest and deportation
of 300 Jewish refugees who -were
living in the agricultural train-
ing village of Wieringemeer in
north Holland.
They and other Jews caught in
Amsterdam were sent to Maut-
hausen concentration camp where
most of them were later killed.
The mass deportation was or-
dered in reprisal for partisian at-
tacks on German army officers
in Amsterdam.
Barbie was subsequently trans-
ferred to Lyons, where he became
chief of the Gestapo for southern
France and was responsible for
the mass deportation of French

war and acquired Bolivian citizen-
ship - under the, false _name: of,
Klaus Altmann. Barbie bad been
living in Peru' up to last month
whezi° France formally requested
his extradiction.
Bolivia is one of the countries
that has refused to ratify an inter-
national convention voiding the sta-
tute of limitations on war crimes.
It hai in the past aided 'Germans
who fled Europe and refuses to
extradite its own citizens.
Mrs. Klarsfeld has requested an
interview with the Bolivian Chief
of State, Gen. Banzer. Banzer is of
German extraction and has aided
fleeing Nazis in the past. But Mrs.
Klarsfeld apparently intepds to
argue that Bolivia would discredit
itself if it refuses to dissociate it-
self from former Nazis who "soiled
the reputation cif the German
people."
Legal and political circles here
said that Bolivia would be justified
in canceling Barbie's citizenship
on the grounds that he used a false
identity to obtain it.
Bolivia and France have good
political and diplomatic relations.
But the South American country
is in a delicate position. Barbie
is a part owner of the Trans-
maritima BoUviana, a shipping
company in which the La Paz
government holds shares.
The country's internal political
and economic problems will prob-
ably determine its decision, circles
here said.
The former Gestapo chief for
southern France has supporters in
the Bolivian capital. Paulovich, a
popular columnist in the La Paz
Catholic daily "Presencia," main-
tained that "Mankind in 1972 can-
not be disposed to punish offenses
committed 30 years ago."
Meanwhile in Bo-nn, a West Ger-

man court has reduced a former
SS officer's life sentence to 15
years. As he had already served
17 years, he was set free, and can
apply for rmancial compensation
for the two years served beyond
tbg ftwly_set tesaa.
The ex-officer, former Capt.
Otto Hoppe, had been convicted of
the murder of thousands of Jews
in Nazi-held Poland and Russia.
He has always maintained he was
not involved in the executions. His
attorneys announced their inten-
tion to lodge an appeal with the
Supreme Federal Court for a re-
view of the case and an outright
acquittal.
