Nathan Kaufntan's Role as Judge,
Frjend to Youth Honored at Dinner

A onetime newsboy who as a
judge has never quite forgotten
the needs of children was honored
by his synagogue Tuesday eve-
ning — 50 years after he observed
his Bar Alitzva at the -old Cong.
Beth Abraham on Winder St.
Judge Nathan Kaufman's col-
leagues in the legal profession, as
well as community leaders and
synagogue 'friends, were in the
testimonial dinner gathering of
some 350. The event marked the
presentation of Cong. Beth Abra-
haritHillers first Community Serv-
ice Award and the establishment
of a Judge Nathan J. Kaufman
Library at the synagogue, of
which he has been a lifelong
member.
The Wayne County Circuit
Court judge was cited for. his
quarter-century of service to the
community, including, in particu-
lar, his work with troubled youth
as a former juvenile court judge,
and his active role in unionism.

Three justices of the Mich-
igan Supreme Court — Chief
Justice Thomas M. Kavanagh,
Thomas G. Kavanagh and John
B. Swainson — expressed the
tMlonte of the bench, and many
other judges were in the au-
dience.

Apologizing because "There are
many gifts that we owe him, but
the impoverished condition of the
city allows us only to give a gift
of the spirit." Detroit Coinmon
Councilman Mel Ravitz read a
resolution signed by the mayor
and council members extending
their commendation for Judge

Kaufman's service, which has
brought him national prominence
and distinction. '
A longtime friend of Judge
Kaufman, Sheldon Tappes — to-
day treasurer of the Detroit chap-
ter of the NAACP — recalled
their early days as automobile
union activists. (Judge Kaufman
was vice president- of a UAW
local at the Ford -Motor Co.
bomber plant during World War
II.)
Tappes extended - the apprecia-
tion of the black community and
the- NAACP for Judge Kaufman's
compassion and understanding at
the bench.
