Bir-Ilan-Plnlosophy Chair Named - for French Rabbi

RAMAT GAM--In the presence
of dignitaries and guests from
France, the Rabbi Kaplan Chair
in Jewish Philosophy was inau-
gurated at Bar-Ilan University.
The chair was established in
honor of Rabbi Jacob Kaplan, chief
rabbi of France, coinciding with
his 75th birthday.
Prof. Moshe Schwarcz of Bar-
ilan's philosophy department was
_appointed to the chair.
Rabbi Kaplan gave a report on
"The Finali Affair," a cause cele-
bre in the early 1950s when the
Jewish community of France suc-
ceeded in rescuing the two Finali
brothers from the hands of a Cath-
olic nun who refused to return the
orphans to their Jewish relatives
after the war.
Present at the Bar-Ilan event
was Msgr. M. Mass, who had

helped rescue the Finali boys. He
also was instrumental in saving
hundreds of French Jews from the
Nazis. Jacques Mercier, another
guest, told the audience that he,
himself, owed his life to the ef-
forts of Msgr. Mass.
